'In the meadow I go walking in the early morning breeze
I cup my hands to catch a multi-colored butterfly
Perched upon the petals of flowers growing wild
Freeing it I watch it as it flies away from me
To visit with the flowers in the early morning breeze'
Lyrics by Dolly Parton
Title from 'Gates of Eden' by Bob Dylan
'Wrap your troubles in dreams
Send them all away
Put them in a bottle and
Across the seas they'll stay'
Written by Lou Reed sung by Nico.
"Brother rose up 'gainst brother
In every circumstance
They fought and slaughtered each other
In a deadly dance"
Tempest
Bob Dylan.
Here we are in a global pandemic and it seems like people continue to crap on each other every chance they get and take crazy risks..literally dancing with death..with their own and others lives.....
A total 'stream of conciousness' creation. Usually I have an idea or a dream for my work... this time I sat down with a blank canvas, put music on and started painting with no idea of what was going to happen. Lots of different textures on this piece, needs to be seen in person, contact me if you'd like to view. Title inspired by the lyrics to 'Fruit Tree' by Nick Drake.
A rare landscape painting! The 140ft Burton Pynsent Monument on Troy Hill in Curry Rivel, Somerset, England was built in 1767.
I love paint! And painting! Just wanted to paint something fun and vibrant during these troubled times.. Enjoy!
Title inspired by the lyrics of the late, great Leonard Cohen.
"Domestic abuse killings 'more than double' amid Covid-19 lockdown" - source The Guardian newspaper.
Headlines like this set me thinking how much lockdown must amplify the awful situation of being a victim of domestic abuse. I imagine that it must feel like a prison, that time would loose all meaning, that people must feel helpless and without a voice. This is what came out. I didn't enjoy painting it but felt a need to do it. Title inspired by the song by the hugely talented Tracy Chapman, the lyrics are very poignant I feel.
'And who by fire, who by water
Who in the sunshine, who in the night time'
Lyrics by Leonard Cohen.
'I'm laughin' at clouds
So dark up above
The sun's in my heart
And I'm ready for love'
Lyrics from 'Singin' In The Rain'
In the summer I was sitting with my family in the outside seating area at Yandle's Cafe, Martock in Somerset, and watching the ladybirds moving around on the ham-stone wall in the sunshine, and it inspired me to paint this...
"She is calling from the deep,
Summoning my soul to endless sleep.
She is bound to drag me down,
Drag me down"
Lyrics from 'The Nile Song' by Pink Floyd .
In ancient Greek mythology Sirens were evil, vicious creatures, who lured sailors with their beauty, bewitching music and singing voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island. Despite their outward innocent appearance they were said to be killers and would tear the men to pieces and devour them..........Originally they tended to be depicted as women and/or bird women but over time they have become interlinked with legends of mermaids.
Title inspired by song lyrics by The Stranglers No story as such with this painting, just celebrating the wonders of the human form!
Somewhere there's a feather
Falling slowly from the sky
You need not know the reason why'
Song by Nico, written by Jackson Browne
As with this painting's companion piece, I saw Cherise, who is a fellow artist, and model, and knew i wanted to cover her in feathers and paint her as an exotic bird of paradise, surveying the scene high in the trees, surrounded by colour, so I did!! I wanted an unusual bird like pose for this one, so the figure wasn't standing in a typical human way, which I think (hope!) we got! We met up, I photographed her last year for reference material (I'm not a speedy artist!) and this, and another painting, is the result. Enjoy!
Title taken from the lyrics of 'Good Fortune' by PJ Harvey , which also has the line;
I paint pictures
To remember
You're too beautiful
To put into words
Which i love, and i think helps sum up some of why i paint! Basically, I saw Cherise, who is a fellow artist and model, and knew i wanted to cover her in feathers and paint her as an exotic bird of paradise, basking in the light, surrounded by colour, so I did!! We met up, I photographed her last year for reference material (I'm not a speedy artist!) and this, and another painting, is the result. Enjoy!
This is my painting, and tribute, to the legendary musician Bert Jansch. While not a household name, he is a hugely influential and revered name among fellow musicians and lovers of good music. Listening to his beautiful guitar playing, both on record and live in concert has brought me so much joy over the years and I wish very much he was still with us. I have been exhibiting recently in Frome, Somerset, and the venue, The Cheese and Grain, have opened a recording studio called The Bert Jansch Studio, so he has been on my mind and it inspired me to paint this piece, the birds are Avocets , which was the title of one of his great albums, and one of the most beautiful and calming pieces of music i have ever heard. So if you don't know him, go listen! IF you are a fan of Led Zepplin, The Smiths, Neil Young or Suede note the internet states; "Jansch's work influenced such artists as Al Stewart, Paul Simon, Johnny Marr, Elton John, Ian Anderson, Bernie Taupin, Bernard Butler, Jimmy Page, Nick Drake, Graham Coxon, Donovan, Neil Young, Fleet Foxes, Devendra Banhart, Neil Halstead, and Roy Harper". ..I notice they forgot the ladies! Beth Orton and Mazzy Star and Sandy Denny spring to mind! AND he was partners for a time with my favorite folk singer of all time Anne Briggs AND was the co-founder of Pentangle! Enjoy the painting!
Title inspired by 'Lay Lady Lay' Bob Dylan.
Title inspired by a lyric by Nick Cave.
Title inspired by the lyrics of It Ain't Me Babe by Bob Dylan, but as sung by Joan Baez, so from a female perspective!
"Go 'way from my window
Leave at your own chosen speed"
lyrics by Bob Dylan
Holi is a Hindu spring festival, also known as the "festival of colours" or the "festival of love" I saw a film of thousands of people throwing coloured pigment powder all over each other and it looked amazing, so I wanted to paint my version! I decided to use actual Holi powder rather than standard powder paints and have spent last few months fusing the powder into the painting surface, I don't make life easy for myself! No life model this time, made the girl up, but for those of you old enough to remember, her eyes were inspired by the late actress Kate O'Mara when she was young!
I was listening to Tim Buckley a lot while painting this piece, lots of hazy, chilled out folky, jazzy songs, which I think suits my life model's lovely chilled out deep dark eyes!
Ah, it's a happy time inside my mind
When a melody does find a rhyme
Says to me I'm comin' home to stay......
......Sleep late now mama
Let the mornin' sun warm your bed
lyrics from 'Happy Time' , track one on the album 'Blue Afternoon' by Tim Buckley.
"Her milk-white throat
Hidden behind the curtain
Of her beautiful black hair
As deep as ink and black,
Black as the deepest sea"
'Black Hair' lyrics by Nick Cave
Siobhan, who is a professional photographic model, was my life model for this painting, she has jet black hair, very pale smooth skin and amazing red lips, so the direction of the painting just occurred naturally!
Simply wanted to create a striking, vivid image in a darker pallet than I've used recently, with clean lines etc. Title inspired from a lyric in 'The Tower of Learning' by Rufus Wainwright.
"I saw it in your eyes, what I'm looking for .........
....All the sights of Paris
Pale inside your iris
Tip the Eiffel Tower with one glance
Stained glass cathedrals with one glint"
"Saturday sun came early one morning
In a sky so clear and blue ...."
...from Saturday Sun,
by Nick Drake
Simply wanted to produce a beautiful painting, working from my beautiful friend Chloe, sitting for me in a beautiful garden in Drayton, Somerset. Did I mention it's beautiful here?!
As with No.1 she was painted in Somerset in springtime surrounded by blossom and flowers and again, I don't know who the girl is, she just emerged 'organically' ! I think she has just awoken from a sensual dream on a beautiful morning, stepped from her bed and flung open the curtains and is bathing in the light.
Title was taken from The Stone Roses song 'Waterfall'.
"She'll carry on through it all
She's a waterfall"
This is my second painting where my friend Amy has been my artist's model. With the previous painting of her I knew exactly how it was going to look from the start. This one was more free-form, I just started with Amy in that pose and let the picture 'grow' from there. Amy has undergone a few rotten experiences but is always happy and lively, bubbly and smiling and I wanted to reflect that in the painting. When I finished I was thinking of a title and realised the lyrics seemed really apt for this piece, hence the title!
The title was taken from The Rolling Stones' song 'She's a Rainbow' they sing;
She comes in colors ev'rywhere
She combs her hair
She's like a rainbow
Coming, colors in the air
Oh, everywhere
She comes in colors
I was listening to it one day, it's a very happy, upbeat song, and that night I dreamed the picture almost exactly as it is painted. I often dream ideas but they change a lot in the production of the final piece. I wanted the everyday children's bubble set to be almost magically producing the rainbow butterflies and embracing the joy of all the wildlife around in spring and summer. I dreamed it was my friend Amy in the painting, I saw her in our village later that day, and went over, a little nervously (!) to ask her if she would like to be in a painting - before I had the chance, she came over to me to ask about a painting for her! So this painting was obviously always meant to be!!
There will probably be a series of these,.. Painted in Somerset in springtime surrounded by blossom and flowers. I was trying out some new, high pigment, acrylic inks in with regular acrylic paint and the picture just evolved as i was painting. I don't know who the girl is, she just painted herself into existence I think! I like her though, she looks very serene, she's maybe a tiny bit sad, I don't know why when she has all those flowers around her! I love living here!
The Painting is called 'New Amsterdam' it was inspired by a song of the same name by Elvis Costello. There are lots of stories as to the meaning of the lyrics, but it's said that while he was in New York in the 70's he had an affair with a playboy model called Bebe Buell (now more famous for being Liv Tyler's mum) and would call New York by it's original name, New Amsterdam, if he was on the phone etc to cover what he was doing. So I wanted the painting to have a 70's retro style in the brush work etc and with a 'playboy' style figure. Also, no one seems to know if the story is true, so the figure is partly translucent, you can see the water and flowers and buildings through her, to suggest this might all have been imagined! Tulips are mentioned in the lyrics and we all know tulips from amsterdam.. but this is definitely not inspired by Max Bygraves!!!!!!
